PRESENTER: Priya Atwal Community History Fellow, Faculty of History, University of Oxford HOST/CONVENER: Neilesh Bose Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Global and Comparative History, Department of History, University of Victoria DESCRIPTION: This presentation provides an introductory overview to the rise and fall of the so-called “Sikh Empire”: the pan-Punjabi kingdom ruled by the family of Maharajah Ranjit Singh, up till 1849. What factors led to the emergence of this powerful new kingdom and its 'frenemy' relationship with the East India Company? More specifically, by engaging more deeply with the gender politics of the Punjab's ruling elite during this pivotal period, what can we learn anew about the historical fortunes of this influential, but short-lived state? A focus on the lesser-studied queens and princes of the “Sikh Empire” - who built and ruled the kingdom alongside its distinguished founding father, Maharajah Ranjit Singh - will enable us to explore these questions in this seminar. ------------------------- This talk was presented as part of CAPI's "Global South Colloquium" program's "Punjab in the World: History, Politics, and Migration" lecture series https://www.uvic.ca/research/centres/...
