Climbing Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park | Keyhole Route

Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park stands at 14,259 ft. It is the tallest peak in the national park. It can be climbed in one day via the Keyhole route. It is about 14.5 miles and 5,100 ft of elevation gain. We started our climb of Longs Peak around 3am from the Longs Peak trailhead. It was dark throughout the first 6 miles of our hike. At 6 miles we reached the boulder field. The boulder field is where people camp for those who want to break the hike up into two days. From the boulder field, we got our first glimpse of Longs Peak and the Keyhole route we would be taking. We made our way from the boulder field up through the keyhole and began our traverse of "The Ledges." There are painted bull's-eyes to use as markers to remain on the route. Upon completion of The Ledges section, we came to the base of "The Trough" at about 13,300 ft. The Trough is a gully that climbs 600 ft or so up to the next section referred to as "The Narrows." The Narrows is a set of exposed ledges leading along the south side of Longs Peak. Once we finished scrambling through The Narrows, we reached the final section of the climb, "The Homestretch." The Homestretch is about a 300 ft climb up a steep granite face that leads directly to the summit of Longs Peak! The views of Rocky Mountain National Park are stunning from the large, flat summit.
