Originally released in Japan in 1999 as 'Simple 1500 Series Vol. 13: The Race', it was released a year later in North America under the simplistic name of 'Racer'. Midas Interactive got their hands on it in 2003, releasing it in Europe under the name of 'Pro Racer'. This is as bare boned as racing games get. You have three cars to choose from, and only two tracks to start off with. You unlock a third mirrored track once you have completed the Novice and Pro difficulties, and gain access to the 'Extreme' difficulty. Needless to say, extreme difficulty isn't difficult in the slightest. Once you complete extreme you then have access to 'Rally' mode, but there's no rally stages, Instead, you race on all three circuits back-to-back with a countdown timer, completing this on all three difficulties allows you to race with the CPU cars. The countdown timer during this mode is completely broken and the game doesn't know what to do if you get over 99 seconds remaining on the clock. Handling characteristics of the cars are incredibly lacklustre with dodgy hitboxes. You gain more grip on the grass when cornering which you can exploit on some tracks. Music is semi-decent but the sound effects are terrible. There's no real sense of speed either when it comes to the faster class of machinery. The game can be 100% completed in about an hour. All-in-all this is a terrible game.
