In the series "Reise ohne Passierschein" an SFB team visits the GDR. The reporters record what has changed since the Second World War. In 1961 they also visit Schwedt in the Uckermark on the Oder, where almost 90% of the houses had been destroyed. The neglected ruins of the margrave's castle still stand out in the city centre as a reminder of the wartime period. Instead of rebuilding the old buildings, the "Zonen" government is pushing ahead with the construction of socialist model settlements. In the overgrown castle park counts don’t hold court anymore, but young pioneers are trained. The town of Schwedt is economically prosperous thanks to high income from tobacco and oil. An oil pipeline even runs the long distance from the Volga to the Oder. At the river, the "Eternal Peace Border" with watchtowers and barbed wire of the Polish army quickly reminds the team of the Cold War. The visitors from the West lament the innovations in the East and look critically at the other Germany.
