Alien is a fixed shooter for the Thomson TO range of home computers. No-one seems to know who wrote this or when it was released - not even if it is a homebrew or commercial program. It is running here on a Thomson TO7, the earliest computer in the range. The game is a simple fixed shooter, where various designs of alien descend from the top of the screen. If shot, these split into two smaller ones that bounce around the screen until destroyed. Eventually, the blue line at the top of the screen starts to descend. This deflects any aliens heading upwards back down, so it makes the area the smaller aliens bounce around in shrink - which makes your life harder. If you destroy the final alien of each level (a golden, wasp-like creature) the blue line resets back to the top of the screen and an extra life is awarded. You then head on to a harder faster level. If you get killed at any point, you get sent back to the start of that level. This game can be hard and you need to have your wits about you straight away - I had quite a few games where I scored less than 100 points. If you can settle into a rhythm though, you can get your scores up into the thousands. The TO7 is an old machine, launched in 1982, making it a contemporary of machines like the BBC and ZX Spectrum. This is evident in the graphical style. For some reason the game has no sound. A simple game, but an interesting introduction for me to this unusual computer family. This run was made on the 1st March 2026. The game has no skill levels and was played on a Thomson TO7, using the DCMOTO emulator. The final score was 1,596 points.
