Close up plaque 14. Mid shot statue STORYLINE: A group of Iraqi artists, actors and students unveiled a new statue in al Firdos Square, Baghdad on Thursday. The new sculpture, which features a central figure beneath a crescent moon - the symbol of Iraq's majority religion, Islam - replaces the large bronze Saddam Hussein statue which was torn down by US troops in the wake of the recent war. The group call themselves Al Najeen - The Survivors - an allusion to the fact that they evaded the authorities during Saddam Hussein's regime. The young group of Iraqi artists, sculptors, painters and actors were quick to present new plays and exhibitions after Saddam's regime fell. Bassam Muhammed, a member of the group said the changing times in Iraq were representative of the first signs of freedom. He was optimistic that the Iraqi people could move forward and added that Al Najeen would contribute to this.
