#6687 For sale at Gateway Classic Cars in our St. Louis showroom is a 1979 Shay Model A Roadster Super Deluxe. The Shay is a very close representation to the original Model A. Things that separate this from an original are a fiberglass body and a Ford Pinto 2.3 liter 4 cylinder engine proving a bit more pep. The steering was also upgraded to rack and pinion, electronic ignition (12 volt) and the addition of disc brakes up front. The Pinto engine in addition to providing more power also provides much better reliability. Proving so is the 30,000 miles that has been put on this little daily driver. Speed, comfort and reliability with a Model A. Shay Motors Corporation started building these in 1979 in recognition to the 50th anniversary of the Model A and marketed through Ford dealers. Production facilities were in Wixom, Holland and Ft. Custer, Michigan with final assembly in Battle Creek, Michigan. Only around 5,000 were built between 1979 - 1982 and list price varied from $5,950 - $12,995. The car comes with more period correct appearing wire wheels, including two spares to mount on the fenders. The current wheels are aluminum 14 inch with radial tires. Only the trained eye will distinguish a Shay from the real deal and most likely appreciate the upgrades incorporated into it.
