More than 9 dialect groups make up Singapore’s Chinese community. Come meet Henghua, Hokkien’s cousin. While the Hokkien number almost 1.2 million, the Henghua people come to just a little over 26,000. In this first episode, we visit Singapore’s only surviving Henghua puppet troupe, Sin Hoe Ping puppet troupe. A skilled puppet maker with decades of experience, troupe master Yeo Lye Hoe will show us snippets of what goes into his niche craft, a glimpse of his towering puppets, and his hopes for the future of Henghua. In the video, we also visit Kiew Lee Tong Temple’s Henghua owners, Tay Cheong Swee and Alex Tay. As custodians of the temple and Henghua legacy, we’ll learn uniquely Henghua culture and customs across architecture to history, rituals and lingos. And with fourth generation Henghua owners of Ming Chung Restaurant, siblings Nicholas and Amanda Ho will not only open up your eyes to Henghua cuisine, they’ll also dive into how the Henghua community found familiar comfort through food, and called home in a city far away from home.
