States to cover costs of forced quarantine for new arrivals

NSW Police Minister David Elliott says he believes hotels will be “handed over” to authorities under changes which force all people arriving in Australia from Sunday to be placed in 14-day quarantine around their landing site. “I doubt very much that you’d find there’d be many guests at a hotel that would want to be staying at a property where there are potentially carriers of coronavirus,” he told Sky News host Chris Kenny. When asked about the cost of acquiring hotels for the duration of the quarantine measure, Mr Elliott said based on his briefing “state governments will be covering the costs of the hotels which would probably include some sort of food arrangement, beverages”. “I don’t think that anybody coming off a plane would expect the taxpayer to cover any of those further luxuries over the course of a 14-day period.” Image: Getty
