Last Sunday was the Leonhardiritt again in Kirchweidach. A friend called me the Friday evening before last and asked me if I had plans for Sunday. He told me about the promise of the Leonhardi Association to have a Leonhardiritt every year. This promise should be kept this year despite Corona. However, the tour should be carried out on a much smaller scale and secretly, without spectators. Since I've always ridden with them in the last few years, I said that I would also accompany the club flag this year. On Sunday morning we met in a yard at nine-thirty, cleaned and decorated our horses and teams. At ten o'clock we surprisingly got the pastor after the service and made a pilgrimage around the village. Then the horses and we got the blessing and went back home. Here as a comparison of the Leonhardiritt from this year and 2019. Just to get the impression of how beautiful and elaborate it is in normal years. At the Leonhadiritt 2019 you can see, for example, several music bands from the area, various wagons with motifs (the church of Kirchweidach, various holy figures, ...), wagons from breweries and wagons with and from various associations (fire brigade, riflemen, traditional costume association ...) and organizations (kindergarten, ...). Of course, the mayors and district administrators in the area should not be missing. The Leonhardifahrt or the Leonhardiritt is a procession on horseback, which is a tradition in old Bavaria and western Austria. It takes place in honor of St. Leonhard of Limoges (6th century) on his feast day, November 6th, or on a neighboring weekend. As the patron saint of agricultural animals, today horses in particular, pilgrimages with animal blessings are undertaken at Leonhardi. The motive for the blessing (often incorrectly also called consecration) of animals, especially horses, is their role, which they played as pack animals and work animals for the rural population. Numerous traditional costumes can be seen during the pilgrimage with the blessing of horses. The carriages and horses are festively decorated. In some places figures and relics of St. Leonhard are carried along. Sometimes an attempt is made to make the difference between Leonhardiritt and Leonhardifahrt by the fact that during the ride only men ride the horses (so that women were excluded and on some rides also are), while during the ride mainly the peasant women, maids and Children are driven.
