This chapter shows 2 out of 5 colonies of Danube's Swabians living in Brazil: Cachoeira and Socorro Danube’s Swabians The history of the Danube's Swabians and its cultural identity happens together with the southeastern Europe, including the former Yugoslavia, in a period that covers the 17th century to the middle of the 20th’s. In fact, the history is extensive and complex, once that same period represents the very formation of several among the present European countries, with wars, mergers, invasions, immigration and the constant redefinition of borders. In Entre Rios (Guarapuava - PR - Brazil) The Entre Rios district has become the only rural community of Danube’s Swabians nowadays in a similar way to those that existed in southeastern Europe. In other countries, the Swabians are dispersed, sometimes in large urban centers. Today, aware about the need of being part in a multicultural world, the Danube’s Swabians of Entre Rios and their descendants, alongside the pride and gratitude of having their new homeland in Brazil, keep the example of their ancestors and persist to overcome the new challenges brought by globalization: the deep and fast modernization of agriculture in times of borderless markets and the preservation of its cultural identity. In Brazil During and after World War II, many Swabians left southeastern Europe, headed for Austria, where they lived for 7 years in refugee shelters. The Swiss Aid for Europe philanthropic institution (Schweizer Europahilfe) organized a project to make a possible alternative of living for a group of Danube’s Swabians in Austria: a total of 500 families, 2,446 people, signed up for the initiative, which aimed the creation of an agricultural cooperative in Brazil as a path to a new future. Thus, was born the initiative that would lead to the foundation of the Agrária Cooperative and the colonization of “Campos de Entre Rios”, a town that is a district of the municipality of Guarapuava (PR). Agrária was founded on Brazilian soil - not in Germany or elsewhere in Europe. The Cooperative's founding ceremony took place on May 5, 1951, at the Hotel Central, in Guarapuava. Agrária, with financial support from Swiss Aid for Europe, acquired, in Entre Rios, an initial area of around 22 thousand hectares. The Swabians who participated in the immigration project for Entre Rios became cooperative and with the fruit of their labor paid the association for the land received. In Entre Rios, the Swabians' willingness to face the many difficulties of the first years, marked by crop losses, lack of infrastructure and, due to language difficulties, alongside their enormous effort to overcome of obstacles, wrote one of the most remarkable pages in the history of German ethnic immigration in Brazil.
