The success of the Erie Canal in New York prompted several states to follow suit. Ohio was among the first to do so and constructed two canals between 1825 and 1845 that connected the Ohio River with Lake Erie. The Ohio & Erie Canal, in the east, went through cities and towns like Cleveland, Akron, Coshocton, Columbus, and Portsmouth. The Miami and Erie Canal, in the west, ran through Toledo, Defiance, Piqua, Dayton and Cincinnati. Combined the two canals opened Ohio's interior to travel and commerce and led to an economic/population boom in the state. Unfortunately, the Ohio canals didn't enjoy the same long-term prosperity of the Erie Canal. After peaking in the 1850s, they began to decline in revenue and use. Railroads and maintenance costs slowly chipped away at the canals until the Great Flood of 1913 caused them to be permanently abandoned. Today some restored remnants of the canals are seeing a rebirth for recreational purposes.
