Professor Carmine Pariante presented his research in perinatal psychiatry, the mental health of women during pregnancy and the first year after childbirth. The lecture discussed the profound effects of this period on mind and body of both mothers and their children and the impact it can have into adulthood. Drawing on more than two decades of clinical work and research at the Maudsley Hospital and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London, Carmine demonstrated how stress and depression during the perinatal period have profound effects in the biology and psychology of both the mothers and the children, potentially reaching the next generation in its adulthood. He also presented his most recent work on psychosocial and creative interventions to improve mothers’ well-being and potentially the mental health of future generations.
