It was released on October 3, 2025, through Republic Records. Swift created the album during the European leg of the Eras Tour in 2024, inspired by her life as an entertainer. She described it as a vibrant and lively project, departing from the bleak lyricism of its predecessor, The Tortured Poets Department (2024), while critics described it as a pop and soft rock album exploring light-hearted perspectives of love and fame. Swift wrote and produced The Life of a Showgirl with the producers Max Martin and Shellback in Sweden, working with the duo for the first time since Reputation (2017). It contains 12 songs, including the lead single "The Fate of Ophelia". American singer Sabrina Carpenter is featured on the album's title track. Photographed by Mert and Marcus, Swift adopted a provocative, showgirl-inspired theme for the album, which journalists described as the most glamorous and flamboyant visual aesthetic of her career. Swift announced The Life of a Showgirl on the sports podcast New Heights on August 13, 2025, with her partner, the American football player Travis Kelce. An album launch event and film, titled The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, is set to have a limited theatrical release in over 100 countries, starting from October 3. The Life of a Showgirl was met with mixed reviews from music critics upon release. Some critics praised the album for its joyful, mellow production and humorous lyrics, while others characterized it as dull and disappointing, particularly given the album's exuberant branding. The Life of a Showgirl was conceived amidst the release of Swift's eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, which marked the biggest opening week of her career, spent a career-best 17 weeks atop the Billboard 200 chart, as well as her heightened fame and publicized personal life during her 2023 run of the Eras Tour. She included songs from the album in a revamped set list for the European and final North American legs of the Eras Tour, running from May to December 2024.[4][5] In April 2025, Universal Music Sweden reported in a now-deleted post that the Swedish violinist Erik Arvinder was involved in the production of Swift's upcoming music. On July 15, Hits magazine reported "seismic rumblings of a new Taylor [Swift album]" before removing the claim hours later. Swift teased The Life of a Showgirl with various Easter eggs, with media publications noting the specific outfit choices, social media posts, numbers, visuals, and performances spanning the promotional cycles of Midnights (2022) and The Tortured Poets Department, as well as the Eras Tour.
