Jay Hamilton, the Hearst Professor of Communication and director of Stanford's journalism program, spent the summer of 1980 opening mail at a congressman's office in Washington D.C., fielding constituent concerns about the economy, oil prices and television commercials. When a check came in from a political action committee, he started asking questions -- and the answers led him to his honors thesis, to graduate school, and to co-authoring his first book. "No matter what you're doing, you can learn about the environment, the ecosystem you're in," he says. "Even if you're only opening the mail." We asked Stanford faculty members to tell us about a summer job that ended up influencing their life or career. Here are their stories: https://stanford.io/2Ytz3Lw Musicbed SyncID: MB01DNEIMDHRMVW
