Vicdeaf and DCA Co-Location Announcement

TRANSCRIPT Hi I'm Mac Adam, President of Vicdeaf. I am delighted to be here with Paul Richardson chair of DCA to make this joint announcement. Deaf Children Australia (DCA) and the Victorian Deaf Society (Vicdeaf) are pleased to announce our intention to co-locate and establish a Deaf Centre to better serve the needs of the Deaf community and hard of hearing adults, along with deaf children, young people and their families. We have reached agreement on how this would work. After independent investigation and expert advice, both our Boards feel that by working more closely, we will be able to better service deaf people of all ages to become better connected, informed, empowered and supported. As DCA and Vicdeaf are both considering our future property needs and developing new strategic plans at the moment, this is a great opportunity to consider co-location and establishing a Deaf Centre in the same place. This will be an equal partnership. A merger of the two organisations is not being considered but we will certainly explore all opportunities to collaborate and to achieve greater efficiencies through sharing some corporate services. I'm Paul Richardson, chair of Deaf Children Australia and like Mac, I am delighted to be here. Vicdeaf and DCA will work together to achieve the best outcomes for those who are deaf and hard of hearing at every stage of their lives. By joining forces around a Deaf Centre and co-location, we will: Ensure the community is connected, informed, and supported Provide a greater range of services to fill gaps Empower those who are deaf and hard of hearing Use our combined resources for the community Provide leadership to advance the interests of deaf and hard of hearing people Recognise the culture and heritage of the community Explore opportunities for further collaboration between the two organisations and other parties Be responsive to the challenges and opportunities of the changing environment And create a culture that embraces diversity of opinion We are also excited about the opportunities for advocacy, research, continuity of services and the sustainability of our work. Our Boards have agreed a work plan for the next six months to achieve our joint objectives. We will provide regular updates and opportunities for contributions from the Deaf community, children and young people, and their families.
