Come join us for another exciting travel day on Vancouver Island as we head north to Campbell River, BC to enjoy visiting the town before going hiking at Elk Falls. After our stop at Miracle Beach, we hopped back in the car and continued our drive up to Campbell River, British Columbia. After a week of spotting black bears left, right and centre, we had a funny little incident where we thought a dog was one. Once we got into town, we checked out some of the murals and browsed through antiques at the Trading Post, before heading down to the pier. The Discovery Pier is Canada’s first saltwater fishing pier, so it’s a little piece of history. It looks out over the Discovery Passage and it’s a popular fishing spot. The pier stretches out 600 ft and is equipped with rod holders, bait stands, and fish cleaning tables. You can even rent fishing rods if you’re there between May and October. That afternoon we continued to the Quinsam River Hatchery, because, have I already mentioned that Campbell River is the Salmon Capital of the World?! The hatchery has a visitor center with information about the hatchery program and the salmon life cycle, but really, I think most of us were there for a chance to spot a black bear fishing. You can see pink adults in September, and chinook and coho adults in October and November. It’s open to visitors seven days a week from 8:00am to 3:30pm, and well worth the visit if you’re already in the area. From there, it was onwards to nearby Elk Falls. One of the main draws to Elk Falls is the 25-metre waterfall that gives the park its name. There is a suspension bridge for those willing to brave the heights, as well as viewing decks. And that’s pretty much a wrap for our day exploring Campbell River, BC and the surrounding area. A special thanks to TROVER for making this trip possible. Campbell River, Miracle Beach & Elk Falls: Exploring Vancouver Island's Wild Side 🐻🌲🍦 | Best Day Trips & Bear Spotting Guide 🌄 Good Morning from Vancouver Island! | Miracle Beach Adventure Begins 🏖️ Greetings from the island! Today we explore the beautiful area just outside Campbell River, starting at Miracle Beach—a peaceful, reflective stretch of coastline perfect for morning walks and wildlife watching. The quiet Monday morning gives us the place almost to ourselves, with views of the water, clouds drifting overhead, and the occasional seal popping up. As we stroll along, we set our intentions for the day: spot a black bear at the hatchery, hike Elk Falls, and soak in some local sights around Campbell River, the city where Sam was born! 🦭 From Miracle Beach to Campbell River: Antiques, Murals & Childhood Memories 🏙️ After enjoying the beach, we drive up to Campbell River, passing through Sam’s childhood territory. We make our first stop at a quirky antique store and trading post packed with treasures and trinkets. Sam scores a nostalgic find: a pack of 1991-92 O-Pee-Chee hockey cards—complete with a 28-year-old stick of bubblegum (which, wisely, we don’t eat). Opening the pack, we hope for favorite players and end up with a legendary local: Cam Neely, a Comox BC Hall-of-Famer. 🎣 The Discovery Fishing Pier: Seafood, Sailboats & Ice Cream 🍦⚓ Our next stop is the Discovery Fishing Pier—the first saltwater fishing pier in Canada. Stretching 600 feet into the Discovery Passage, it’s a hub for fishing, sightseeing, and snacking. We admire the fishing vessels and sailboats, scope out fresh seafood stalls, and (of course) detour for ice cream. Even the smallest “kids’ size” cones are massive, stacked high with strawberry and sea salt caramel scoops. 🐟 Black Bear Spotting at Quinsam River Hatchery: Nature Up Close 🐻📷 Next up, we visit the Quinsam River Hatchery, a local hotspot for salmon and black bears alike. The visitor center offers great info on the salmon lifecycle, but we’re here for a bear sighting! As we wait by the river, surrounded by hopeful photographers, we’re lucky enough to see a black bear snatch a salmon—though we miss the perfect shot on camera. 🌉 Elk Falls Provincial Park: Waterfalls, Suspension Bridges & Sunset Hikes 🌅 With time to spare, we continue our adventure to Elk Falls Provincial Park, a spot neither of us explored growing up. The park’s crown jewel is a stunning 25-meter waterfall and a dramatic suspension bridge (built in 2009) that offers jaw-dropping views. As the sun sets, we hike the forested trails in golden light, soaking up the tranquil vibes and snapping photos. Whether you’re braving the bridge or sticking to the lower viewpoints, this is a top spot for nature lovers. Insider tip: Try the old forest growth loop for quieter, less-traveled paths through towering trees.
