At MedTech World Middle East 2026, Hon. Jo Etienne Abela, Minister for Health and Active Ageing of Government of Malta, delivered an opening keynote highlighting Malta’s healthcare journey, its growing adoption of innovation, and the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into clinical practice. Speaking in Dubai, Hon. Minister shared how Malta, despite its population of just over 500,000, continues to make meaningful contributions to medicine and surgery. From the historic foundations of its School of Anatomy and Surgery, established in 1676, to the recent inauguration of a new surgical training model, Malta remains committed to advancing healthcare education and delivery. The keynote explored the country’s expansion of robotic surgery across multiple specialties, demonstrating how focused initiatives and strong partnerships can scale into national services. A central theme of the address was artificial intelligence: from breast cancer screening and radiology reporting (MRI, CT, PET) to emergency triage and endoscopy, AI is increasingly embedded in Malta’s healthcare system. Minister Abela also emphasized AI’s emerging role in multidisciplinary case discussions, patient monitoring, governance, and regulation, while underscoring a crucial message: innovation must not come at the expense of healthcare professionals’ wellbeing. As AI becomes part of everyday clinical practice, he called on leaders and innovators to keep both patients and employees at the center of progress.
