It was discovered that my son had hydronephrosis, swelling of his left kidney due to the build up of urine, during a growth ultrasound when I was around 35 weeks pregnant with him. Hydronephrosis is usually caused by a blockage of the kidney's ureter. This blockage prevents the drainage of urine from the kidney into the bladder. The technical term for this blockage is ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJ) and a pyeloplasty is the name of the procedure that is done to correct and fix the blockage. The surgeon wanted to wait as long as possible before doing the surgery to make sure he was big and healthy for it and the hope was that the problem would correct itself over time. Throughout my son's first year of life, his kidney function was monitored and when he was around 13 months old it was decided to move forward with the surgery. The problem did not fix itself and there was worry that his kidney function would start to decline. The surgery went very well! He is healing great and is back to his normal self. I'm so thankful for the amazing care he received from the hospital surgeon, anesthesiologists, doctors, nurses, and nursing aids!
