Ancient Jain Temple Found in Mandya. The Shravanappa Betta or The Dodda Betta at Aretippura, Maddur Taluk of Mandya Distict of Karnataka, is 75 kms from Mysore and 85 kms from Bangalore. Aretippur is also referred to as Tippuru. The place is very near to Maddur Taluk of Mandya district. Jain basadi is known also as The earliest reference of Aretippur is at the time of Gangas. It is said that the Gommateshwara or Lord bahubali statue was installed here during the time of Hoysala. This looks like sequel to Gommateshwara of Shravanabelagola. Aretippur is scarcely visited by people, as many are not aware of its existence. The recently excavated Digambar Jain Temple located on the Chikka Betta is visible from the Shravanappa Betta. The place was under mining contract and during the process of mining this place was rediscovered and restored. The road to the Betta or Hill is thorough the village and generally deserted. The place is safe to visit in spite of the lack of movement of people around. There are 254 stairs up the hill, which initially are hardly few inches high but later on the stairs are more than one foot higher, making it a little hard to climb. There are no grills to support the climb which makes it a challenge for elderly people. At the last quarter of the climb is the way through the cave. This is the best part of the experience before you reach the breath taking view on top. The entry and exit to the cave is small and requires one to crawl a little to get out of it. The next small flight of stairs leads to the final destination. The view from top is splendid. It's quite windy and hardly few square meters of level area available. On one side there are few boulders. It's a wonder how the statue of Bhagawan Bahubali has been placed at this location and how it has stood there for so many years. How was the statue accessed before the cave was carved out? It's also a important place for jain pilgrims. Few families do visit this place. Mahamastakabhisheka was done to this Gommateshwara few days after the restoration. Best time to visit is early in the morning to avoid the harsh sun. Aretippur is 28 Kms from Mandya, 10 Kms from Madduru and 18 Kms from KM Doddi Sri Charukeerthi Bhattarakha Swamiji at Aretippuru visited the Jain Heritage Centres.
