2025 GROW - The Audacity of Job: Rethinking Faith in the Face of Suffering with Adriane Leveen, PhD. Wednesday, September 17, 2025 The biblical book of Job tells the story of a pious man, Job, who ends up losing his children and property while enduring terrible physical, emotional and spiritual suffering at the hands of a Heavenly Adversary with God’s permission. The story raises many issues that have haunted readers since, including an exploration of divine compassion or indifference in light of our suffering; what it means to be a mensch; and our relationship with the natural world. It is also a magnificent and moving account that has been read and cited by countless readers throughout the ages who have found inspiration in Job’s mettle and determination. In this High Holiday season of 2025, as we prepare ourselves for our own work of self- reflection Job offers a model of spiritual audacity who redefines what faith may mean as he dares to challenge his God. Adriane Leveen is Senior Lecturer in Hebrew Bible at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, having previously taught at Stanford University. Her books include Biblical Narratives of Israelites and their Neighbors: Strangers at the Gate (2017) and Memory and Tradition in the Book of Numbers (2008). She has published in a number of scholarly journals including Prooftexts, Journal for the Study of the Old Testament, and the Harvard Theological Review.
