My friend Shannon was blessed to harvest a nice bull elk in Hell's Canyon, Idaho a few years back. It's actually an episode on a popular hunting show on the Sportsman's Channel - "The Most Wanted List" with Kristy Lee Cook. See link below to Shannon's episode. • The Most Wanted List - Season 7 - Episode 4 Shannon sent me one of the "tusks" from her elk as a gesture of friendship. I've had it a few years and take it out every now and then to admire it. But it seemed a waste to keep it tucked away in a drawer until my expiration date, only to have some heirs find it, shrug their shoulders, and shake their heads, and throw it away. So this summer I decided to act upon something I've been cultivating in my mind for a while now, and have the tusk made into something truly unique and special for Shannon, and to return the gift, albeit modified, to her. I wanted it to be something that would not sit in a drawer and hopefully never be discarded as something useless. I consulted with a local man who makes custom jewelry, a man I now consider to be a friend, Matt Mohr. We traded ideas and soon had a plan to craft what I believe to be one of the most extraordinary pieces of its kind. I'd seen simpler ones, and they were OK, but the goal here was to attempt to replicated Shannon's bull's antlers and wrap them around the teardrop ivory tusk, paying homage to both the animal and to the huntress. It was going to be a Christmas present, but I don't want it to be the centerpiece of anyone's Christmas. It's more the centerpiece of an enduring friendship between "Oregon" and "Virginia", the nicknames we had for each other well before we ever heard the song. My profound thanks to Matt Mohr for his skills, patience, and vision. Whether you need new hand-crafted pieces, or want to turn old pieces into something new, or anything in between, Matt can help you to develop a vision and bring it to life!
