In this 14-minute video, I show why some of the hardest trap melodies are actually the simplest ones. Inspired by the workflow used by 808 Mafia, this session focuses on creating dark, effective melodies without overcomplicating the process. Many producers believe they need a huge collection of plugins, endless sound layers, and complicated music theory to create something that hits. But the truth is the opposite: less is more. When you work with fewer tools, you make stronger decisions. Every sound has a purpose, every note matters, and the melody has space to breathe. In this video, I build a melody from scratch using XPand!2 and show how a simple idea can turn into something powerful. Instead of stacking multiple instruments, the focus is on sound selection, mood, rhythm, and spacing. That’s a big part of what makes the sound associated with 808 Mafia feel so dark and effective. Producers in that lane often start with very simple melodies. A few notes, a strong atmosphere, and a clear direction. They don’t spend hours loading plugin after plugin trying to force a sound. They create quickly, capture the vibe, and keep the arrangement clean so the drums and 808s can hit properly. Another important thing that most tutorials never explain is the role of engineers. During the creative stage, producers keep things simple and focus on the idea. Later, professional engineers handle the technical side — EQ, balance, stereo placement, and polishing the mix so everything sits perfectly. That’s why a melody might start very minimal but still end up sounding huge in a finished record. Understanding that difference between creating and engineering is something many producers never get taught. This video is meant to show the real creative mindset behind making trap melodies. It’s not about using the most plugins — it’s about knowing how to use less in a smarter way. If you’re a producer who keeps adding more sounds hoping the beat will improve, this video might change how you approach your workflow. Sometimes the strongest ideas come from the simplest melodies.
