One of our biggest jobs has been creating a wheelchair ramp up to our front door. We have done this ourselves with no previous experience. So if we can do it, you can too! We removed the old porch and had the front door replaced with a zero entry door. We left the existing door step and used that as a base, and then dug out and added scalpings for the rest of the ramp. We use a mix of 4:1 to get really strong concrete (probably overkill) and used SBR to adhere the slabs to the concrete. REMEMBER to remove any spacers you use before the concrete sets, we forgot and it took ages to get the spacers out! We also had to tackle the rainwater drainage and tapped into the existing soakaway. The original downpipe was blocked with roots and earth and didn't drain at all. It has taken a while for us to get onto the property ladder, and we are very excited about Renovating The Maples. The Maples is a 1960's chalet bungalow in need of a full refurbishment, and we also need to make it wheelchair accessible for one of our children. We want to record our progress, and share this with family and friends who don't live nearby, so decided to create video and written blogs. Neither of us have formal building experience or training, but by combining our design and engineering skills we will give anything a go! Here will will share the ups and downs of Renovating The Maples, the good and the bad, and hope that you find it useful and inspiring.
