In this video, we heat a small chunk of Cadmium metal. At some point is starts to melt and to boil when a dark layer of Cadmium oxide is produced. Cadmium fastly oxidizes at these temperatures. What we find remarkable is that only the metal vapors can cause the dark layer to rise. The boiling point of CdO is much higher. YOu can see that when we directly heat the thin layer of CdO. We already showed you a method to make this oxide by roasting CdS. In the future, we will also go for the Cd(NO)3 way, much like with Pb(NO3)2 and thermally crack that to form CdO as well. Nonetheless, we want to remind you about the dangers of CdO. It may look harmless but CdO certainly is one of the most dangerous Cadmium compounds. Usually, we contribute more dangers to soluble Cd compounds but the oxide is exceptionally dangerous as well!
