Abstract: ---------------- On February 10th, cyber security authorities from the USA, UK and Australia released an extraordinary combined advisory (AA22-040A) warning of an 'Increased Globalized Threat of Ransomware’ (https://www.cisa.gov/uscert/ncas/aler.... The advisory cautions that "Ransomware tactics and techniques continued to evolve in 2021, which demonstrates ransomware threat actors’ growing technological sophistication and an increased ransomware threat to organizations globally". It contains some sound security guidance, and some interesting insights into how the ransomware threat is evolving. This includes observations like: Shifting away from “Big-Game” hunting in the United States. Diversifying approaches to Extorting Money -Targeting the Cloud -Targeting managed Service Providers -Attacking Industrial Processes -Attacking the Software Supply Chain -Targeting Organizations on Holidays and Weekends -Now, the Security Research Team has access to data from over 3,800 confirmed double extortion incidents, and over 34,000 detected security incidents from our Managed Detection operations. These data allow us to interrogate, question, confirm and expand upon the observations made in the CISA advisory. This talk will examine and expand on the perspectives of the international advisory, using the data at our disposal to deeply interrogate what is really going on in the ransomware ecosystem and what that means for our response to the threat.
