It was entirely appropriate that the veteran, Odie Hawkins, draftee –54728, on this particular Memorial Day, would offer an alternative point of view to what life was like in 1962. “No one but me seemed to think that there was something awfully stinky about being sent to the two Army Camps that were named after Lee and Gordon. Two Confederate generals, two traitors who had fought in defense of slavery, ‘cause that’s what it was all about, people as wealth for the enslavers.” While admiring his wife’s gorgeous, mustard colored Punjabi outfit, he proceeds with his horrible journey thru the U.S. Army. “Think about it. They were asking us, whenever it became necessary, to go fight for some people to be free, when we were fighting for the right to vote, then and now. The contradictions were mind numbing.” He tells the story, aided by judicious prompting from Zola, without bitterness; but there is always the underlying undertone of his bitter experiences in uniform. He has at least a thousand tales…many never told before. Note: His website is: www.odiehawkins.com
