The Kingdom Reward Is Not a Legal Matter Have you ever served the Lord and quietly wondered, “What will I get in return?” Maybe you sacrificed your time. Maybe you gave up opportunities. Maybe you endured loss, rejection, or misunderstanding. Deep inside, a question arises: “Lord, what is there for me?” You are not alone. Even Peter asked this question in the Gospel of Matthew 19:27: “Behold, we have left all and followed You; what then is there for us?” Peter’s question revealed something hidden in his heart—a commercial mentality. In the world, everything operates by transaction: you give something, and you expect equal value in return. Peter applied this same principle to the kingdom of God. But the Lord revealed a higher principle. Yes, the Lord promised reward. But He also showed that the kingdom reward is not a legal matter. It is not a business transaction. It is not something you can earn, calculate, or demand. In Matthew 19:30, the Lord said, “Many who are first shall be last, and the last first.” Then in Matthew 20, He explained this through the parable of the laborers in the vineyard. Those who worked all day received the same reward as those who worked only one hour. Why? Because the reward was based on the master’s grace—not human calculation. This message reveals a powerful truth: God’s reward is governed by His grace, wisdom, and loving purpose. The apostle Paul understood this when he said in Philippians 3:8 that he counted all things as loss in order to gain Christ. Compared to Christ, everything else has no real value. What we give up for the Lord cannot compare to what He gives us. The Lord wanted Peter—and He wants us—to move from a commercial mentality to a spiritual mentality. We do not follow Christ to earn wages. We follow Him because He is worthy, precious, and deserving of our love. His reward is not equal to our sacrifice. It is infinitely greater.
