The Patient Safety Movement Foundation is joined by Sherri Ozawa, RN, President and Founding Member, Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management; Clinical Resource Director, Accumen, Inc. to discuss the relationship and distinction between transfusion safety and patient blood management, terms that are often used interchangeably. Transfusions are liquid organ transplants and as such, present risks if not used appropriately. When clinically appropriate, patient blood management introduces reduced risk of adverse events, judicious and optimal use of valuable blood products, improved patient outcomes, and lower costs in many circumstances. Actionable recommendations for stakeholders, including healthcare leaders, patients, and clinicians are explained.
