Soldiers firing gun salute STORYLINE: Mourners gathered in Israel on Thursday for the funeral of Sergeant Major Muhammad al-Atresh, after his body was returned from Gaza. Brigadier General Barak Hiram, commander of the IDF’s infantry division, described the return of al-Atresh’s body as a moral duty. "The return of living hostages along with the dead is a moral obligation imposed upon us and a mission to achieve victory over our enemies," Hiram said during the funeral. The Israeli military on Thursday said that representatives informed the families of 27-year-old Inbar Hayman and Sergeant Major Muhammad al-Atresh, 39, that the remains of their loved ones had been identified. In a press release, the military said Hayman had been taken as militants attacked the Nova music festival on 7 October, 2023. Her death had been pronounced on 15 December later that year. Al-Atresh was killed in combat on the day of the assault on Israel by Hamas militants and his death was pronounced on 24 June, 2024. The return of the remains came hours after the military said that one of the bodies previously turned over was not that of a hostage. The confusion added to tensions over the fragile truce that has paused the two-year war.
