This was my first attempt to complete a goal I came up with this year. To climb Mt Tasman, NZ’s second highest peak, starting at the sea and going all the way to the summit and back in a continuous push. At 9pm just around sunset I touched the water at Gillespie Beach on the West Coast, ran up the beach to my bike, rode 20km to the Fox River, hiked up to Chancellor Hut through the night before donning skis for the glacier up to Pioneer. Unfortunately when I reached Pioneer Hut after 12 hours of continuous movement, the mountains were fully clagged in and I was not keen to try the summit in those conditions. Fortunately, the hut was full of skiers who I knew from Wanaka and Queenstown and they generously offered me food and drinks which was a pleasure in my sleep deprived state. We then skied back down the glacier together as far as Chancellor. This was just the first attempt and I hope to try again soon.
