The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is based in Bryson City, North Carolina. Its depot is at 45 Mitchell St, Bryson City, NC 28713, in the western part of the state near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The trains travel fertile valleys, tunnels, trestles, and river gorges in Swain and Jackson Counties. Popular trips include the 4.5-hour Nantahala Gorge Excursion (44 miles round-trip) and shorter Tuckasegee River rides. It’s a top tourist draw, with 200,000 passengers yearly, including themed rides like the Polar Express. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad (GSMR) originated from the historic Murphy Branch of the Western North Carolina Railroad, constructed in the 1880s to connect Asheville west to Murphy, NC. Built under harsh conditions by convict labor, it faced challenges like steep grades, tunnels, and accidents, such as the 1880s drowning of 19 shackled inmates in the Tuckasegee River.#northcarolina#bryson#greatsmokymountainsrailroad#greatsmokymountains#gsmr#tarheelstate#greatsmokymountainsnationalpark
