The typical FHIR Terminology Service operations of $expand, $validate-code, $lookup, $subsumes and $translate have been widely implemented and are relatively well understood. The $closure operation, while quite powerful and potentially quite useful, has so far received much less attention and use and generally is not very well understood. The idea of $closure is to support the creation and ongoing maintenance of a client-side transitive closure table, which can be very useful when designing applications that require high performance when searching and reasoning with hierarchical terminologies. The Let’s Build session provides a further opportunity for live demonstration and hands on familiarity with $closure and how you can use this powerful capability in your FHIR applications.
