Into the Eye of the Blizzard This video is dedicated to Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew. I step into the blizzard not recklessly, but with purpose — drawn by that same restless spirit that has stirred explorers for generations. Clad in my fully waxed Fjällräven No. 8 Anorak, Steiger mukluks, and a roll-neck submariner jumper, I embrace the cold rather than retreat from it. Beneath my AquaQuest Defender tarp — my small fortress against the storm — I remain dry and protected while the wind howls and the snow drives sideways across the landscape. There, shielded but not sheltered from the experience itself, I roast a leg of lamb against the odds — a quiet act of defiance against the elements. It is these challenges that keep life vivid. They awaken something ancient in us — the same instinct that once sent us charging into the snow as children, fearless and alive. Shackleton has always inspired me to seek adventure. The story of the Endurance remains, to me, the most powerful testament to human resilience ever told. His heroism and steadfast grit allowed him and his men to persevere under conditions so brutal that many others would have simply lain down and surrendered to the cold. None of my own adventures compare to what they endured — but they don’t need to. Their story reminds me that the human spirit is stronger than comfort, stronger than fear. It reminds me that I can endure. As an endurance runner, when I feel spent and doubt creeps in, I picture the Endurance and her crew — stranded, freezing, yet unbroken. In those moments, their example fuels me forward. So I venture into the storm in their honour — not to imitate their suffering, but to celebrate their courage. Adventure keeps the spirit alive.
