Joshua Kane: Blood Sweat & Shares - Simply Handsome 247 Welcome to simply handsome 247, the YouTube channel dedicated to fashion style and creativity for men. In today’s episode we’ll be interviewing Mr. Joshua Kane owner and creator of Joshua Kane bespoke tailoring, Old Spitalfields Market, London. Simply Handsome 247: What is the journey of Joshua Kane? Joshua Kane: I went from my secondary school to my foundation course; having a huge interest in fashion and men's wear in tailoring, and afterwards from my art foundation, I studied in Oxford Brooks specified in men's wearing, started cutting teaching myself. I then went to Kingston University, where I trained as a BA fashion design for three years. While I was there my head pattern cutter was a Saville Row freelance tailor, he worked with a few of the different houses such as Vivienne Westwood and a few other places. He had a studio where I would train with him at the weekend and evenings, he also worked with me wherever we were working. He was a huge inspiration to me, he taught me a lot of the basics and advanced ways to hand stitch, cut and understanding three-dimensional form. After finishing my BA degree and final collection, I moved to New York city for a while, but I sold my first suit whilst at university. I was making my own tailoring during uni, wearing them day in and day out and building interest. Many people wanted to buy them and I refused, saying they weren’t for sale, until a friend really wanted one. I sold it for less to nothing and made a loss on it due to hours involved, but it was a real trill to make something for a friend, and then he be so proud of it. Simply Handsome 247: How did you develop your brand? Joshua Kane: I started doing my labeling and branding ten years ago, when I left, but it has evolved four or five times since to the point that it isn’t going to change now, but it was set in stone and the ethos of the brand hasn’t changed. Simply Handsome 247: What big names have you worked with? Joshua Kane: I worked in New York for Brooks Brothers in their Manhattan flag ship store. I came back to London and joined Jaeger Men’s Wear, back when they were doing fashion week and being very aggressive. They are a heritage company equal to the Burberry’s of this world. I was an assistance designer and went up to a position where I was in-charge of the men’s wear. I finished there and went to Burberry, designing a cross on the catwalk collection working with Christopher Bailey. All this time I still had a studio in my house at the same time working developing, all the hours that there was but still going back and continuing on my own projects. I finished at Burberry then I went to Paul Smith, as senior men’s wear designer, I worked a bit less then three years working on everything… Simply Handsome 247: When did you decide to go it alone? Joshua Kane: It got to a point where my own pieces were getting so much attention without me marketing or advertising it, other then pictures of it popping up on social media. I was getting truly famous people asking to buy my suits. It starts getting truly difficult when a A list celebrity wants to wear your suit, at what point to do say, “I’ll make you one.” At that point I didn’t have time to do it, so I had to leave my job… Special thanks to Mr. Joshua Kane.
