It was built to commemorate the Lahore Resolution, passed on 23rd March 1940, in which the Muslims of the Indian subcontinent demanded a separate homeland that later became Pakistan. The construction of the Minar started in 1960 and was completed in 1968. The design was created by Nasreddin Murat-Khan, a famous Pakistani architect of Russian origin. The monument is about 70 meters (230 feet) tall and beautifully combines Islamic, Mughal, and modern architecture. The base of the tower is shaped like a flower, and inscriptions of the Lahore Resolution, along with verses from the Holy Quran, sayings of Allama Iqbal, and speeches of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, are engraved on its walls. Minar-e-Pakistan is also known as the “Tower of Pakistan” and is one of the most important symbols of the country’s freedom and independence. Today, it stands as a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices made for the creation of Pakistan.
