The Fighting Game is a genre mired in tradition. Although there are many subgenres that have big key differences, for better or for worse, Fighting games are still a genre that values sticking to tradition over change. It’s ironic then, that the most successful and well known fighting game franchise of all time is the one that was not only deliberately designed to ignore tradition, but did so to the point that some people debate if it should even be considered in the same category as Street Fighter or Tekken. Smash Bros. has transcended the normally niche fighting game genre in such a way that has never been seen before or since, with its most recent entry selling over 30 million units and had so much hype around it that it literally broke Twitter a couple of times. This huge success means other companies have tried to get onto the train, and with mixed results. So, as someone who has put entirely too much time playing and thinking about this series, I wanted to make a video about these “Smash Bros. Clones”, where they went wrong and use those lessons to show how to copy companies correctly.
