God’s Word for Today 5 Feb, 2026 8 “And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, 9 but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. -Luke 12:8-9 ESV Christianity is about following Jesus sincerely in the heart. His genuine followers are known by their firm convictions. The Lord Jesus has warned the disciples not be ‘leavened by the leaven of the Pharisees’, that is to follow their hypocritical lives. The Pharisees hated Jesus and His followers. They must not give in to fear when faced with these religious and civil leaders, who have the power to sentence them to death. The people, however, respected the Pharisees. They admired their dedication to follow strictly their religion but not recognizing the hypocrisy of their legalism. Although the adoring crowds gathered around Jesus, He knows they will not always be around to protect the disciples (Mark 12:12; Acts 5:26). They must declare their allegiance to Jesus before others. The approval of Pharisees is nothing compared to Jesus' praise in the company of angels. There is no ambiguity or neutrality. Either we are of Jesus or of the enemy. Apparently, the disciples were intimidated during Jesus’ arrest and resurrection. They dispersed and became silent. However, after Jesus ascended to heaven, the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit. They take Jesus' words to heart. Consequently. Peter and John will speak boldly at the temple and accuse the Jews of crucifying their Messiah (Acts 3:14–15). They will stand before the Sanhedrin and charge the religious leaders with the same crime (Acts 4:8–10). They will refuse to abide by the council's warning to remain quiet about Jesus' resurrection. The council will arrest and beat the apostles (Acts 5:17–42). However, the apostles will leave, "rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name" (Acts 5:41). Jesus promised that the ‘Son of Man also will acknowledge them before the angels of God.’ The phrase "Son of Man" is a messianic title, Jesus referred to Himself. He took the term from Dan 7:13–14. Daniel saw a vision of "one like a son of man" given authority and dominion from the Ancient of Days. Apparently, the Son of Man has a role in the final judgment. Jesus affirmed this before the Sanhedrin when He says, "But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God" (Luke 22:69). In Mat 10:32, Jesus promises to vindicate His followers before God. Here, angels act as witnesses. He does so as Stephen is being killed (Acts 7:55–56). Jesus is too precious to either ignore or deny. The original meaning of "deny" means to disown or assert no relation with. Peter certainly denied Christ at His first trial (Luke 22:54–62). According to Dr. Darrell Bock, the fatal denial in view in Luke 12 is one "of heart," not one "of nerve." Peter lost his nerve but Judas rejected Jesus by heart. Definitely, those who deny Christ in their hearts will suffer His condemnation.[John 12:48] Most of the disciples died as martyrs of Jesus. How about us?
