Mister Man, like It's A Miracle and Black Money were inspired by Boy George's first trip to the United States. It's a comment on the culture shock he experienced in New York City, seeing how crass and uncaring some people can be. It was perhaps less obvious in it's criticism than "It's America", which was changed to "It's A Miracle" early on in the tour before the album was released, because it's lyrics remained untouched on the finished product. It was never a single except for a very hard to find 7" in South Africa where it was released in lieu of the tour making a stop in that country. That single is very much sought after by collectors, not just for the novelty of a title not released anywhere else in the world, but also because the B-side features an otherwise unreleased version of "Black Money", a radio edit that nearly cuts the song in half! With the release of the first Culture Club Greatest Hits album, "This Time", "Black Money" was planned for the single release, and my contact at Virgin Records told me "Mister Man" would have been the B-side to that single, and instead of a 12" version, live versions of both songs (from "A Kiss Across The Ocean") would appear on the 12". It's a shame that single was never released, it just might have been a last chance at chart-topping as the band had already dissolved into various solo projects and personal problems. I've included a bonus mix at the end of this video- a "percapella" version that let's George's gorgeous vocals take center stage, so be sure to listen all the way to the end.
