I often get a query about Becker's nevus. It is basically a pigmentation, growth abnormality which occurs on the epidermis of the skin. It occurs later in life and is not present at birth. In Layman's term we can call it as a mole but there are different varieties. So the problem is in the epidermal layer of the skin and it is basically because of epidermal hypergrowth and the pigmentation is quite deep and it is permanent. Lot of treatments have been done including lasers and excision. There is no effective treatment which can get rid of it 100% without causing deformities. The problem with Becker's nevus is that it usually covers a wider area. It covers the shoulder or the back and sometimes there will be hair growth on it. To remove the hair you can do lasers or electrolysis. But the pigmentation is usually deep and it is in the full thickness of the skin. So once that is there any treatment like lasers that you do are effective to a certain depth because of which it doesn't eliminate it completely. So as of now the treatment options are limited and you can do few things which can lighten the area or it may reduce the visibility of the area and there is no treatment which will completely remove it without causing scarring. If it is in a critical area you will have to go for a surgery but in surgery you will have to remove the nevus and put in a skin graft or do a flap. We usually do it when the nevus is in a critical area or very visible area and you need to do something about it. In all those cases you will have some amount of scarring depending on what procedure that you are going to do.
