What is Tetanus vaccination? Tetanus is an infectious disease caused by bacteria found on rusted metals and in the air. Tetanus can be contracted when bacteria enter our bodies through wounds or burns in any part of the body. Tetanus symptoms include involuntary muscle spasms, constricted jaws, difficulty swallowing and in severe cases the curving of your spine. If you have a tetanus infection, you can either be admitted to the ICU and treated with anti-tetanus immunoglobulins or you can obtain a vaccination to prevent it from becoming an infection. One of the components of the tetanus vaccination is tetanus toxoid. It is administered to children in India as part of the DPT ( diphtheria, tetanus toxoid, and pertussis ) vaccination. The tetanus-toxoid immunization should be given in five doses according to the WHO. We’re required to get 7 doses of the vaccination, according to the Indian Universal Immunisation Program or UIP. It is not necessary to obtain a tetanus injection for every cut if you have followed the recommended vaccination schedule. The first dose is given to babies on the sixth week. The second and the third doses are administered on the tenth and fourteenth weeks respectively. Following that, another dose should be given between 15-18 months, a second dose between 5-7 years, and the third dose between 10-12 years, according to UIP. These are called booster doses. In addition to these precautions, it is critical to receive one immunization dosage when you find out you are pregnant, followed by a second dose after four weeks later. If you don’t remember your initial tetanus doses or you think there is a gap of 20-25 years after primary doses during childhood, it’s better to repeat the primary doses and then take a booster every 10 years. If you get booster doses every 10 years, you don’t need to have shots every time you get a cut. It is not required to get a shot even if the wound is large unless your doctor requests it. #tetanus #tetanusinfection #prevention #treatment #infection #awareness #vaccination #precautions #tetanustoxoid #immunisation
