Classic TV Theme: How the West Was Won (James Arness)
Having little or no relation to the movie of the same name, this ambitious series still managed to put on a good Western show on a very large scale. The titles and credits lived up to the challenge; the opening titles were presented over picturesque American scenes in fly-over fashion, with the images partially refreshed for the following season. The end credits used similar footage early on, later in the series turning to a sequence of classic Western paintings by Charles Marion Russell. Stirring music by Jerrold Immel enhances the opening titles; it takes on a noble, soaring quality for the end credits. All in all, one of tv's most impressive Western themes.
