Activists demonstrate against the tax-funded research of Edythe London, who works at UCLA and has made a living off of animal drug addiction experiments for 27 years. Her focus is on methamphetamine and nicotine addiction in primates, and recent experiments have involved drugging and killing Vervet monkeys from the UCLA Vervet Research Colony. Scientific evidence shows that animal testing doesn't work, is avoidable, is dangerous for human health, is ethically compromised, and that there are better research methods for producing the same results. Edythe London's research is particularly disturbing because she chooses to research on and kill monkeys. Nonhuman primates are known to have emotions, form friendships and familial bonds, and experience pain just as humans do. As many countries around the world phase out research on nonhuman primates and as our own country puts a moratorium on the use of chimpanzees, Edythe London continues to use monkeys in research.
