While most singers were making love songs, he and his band, “The Palmdale Players” chose to take a more vulgar approach, often singing about drugs and sexual exploits with females of all different races. His biggest hit “Colt 45” was released in 1964, just one year after the malt liquor was introduced to the market. Originally popular as a beverage for white folks, Joyner and the gang wanted to show people that they were just as elegant as any caucasian individual and could indulge in the same delicacies. Known for his heavy usage of cannabis, Joyner was arrested many times for possession of the mind-altering substance. Sadly Joyner was beat half to death in his hometown of Palmdale in 1969 after being found in bed with the white daughter of a Ku Klux Klan member. As he laid in the hospital bed paralyzed he was interviewed by a local newspaper. When asked if he had any regrets about the situation he said, “I ain’t mad at her prejudice dad. That’s the best damn pussy I ever had!” Spoken like a true class act.
