Truth, trust, and the fight for democracy | Susanna Ahonen | TEDxSaarbrigge

In an age where nearly all online content may soon be synthetic, truth and trust are under attack. This talk explores how disinformation, political manipulation, and declining media trust threaten democracy worldwide. From the Cambridge Analytica scandal to the global rise of deepfakes, we see how hostile actors exploit confusion to weaken democratic institutions. The answer isn’t censorship—but strong, independent journalism and robust media education. Highlighting countries that lead in press freedom and media literacy, the talk shows why teaching people—especially the young—to recognize credible journalism is essential to protecting democratic values in the AI era. Susanna is responsible for the News Media Finland’s Information literacy project. Her favourite things are journalism, democracy and media education. She has a master's degree in communication sciences and informatics. Additionally, she has completed a teacher's qualification.
