The Off-Grid House is nestled within the untouched wilderness of California's Central Coast. This unique summer residence, designed by Anacapa Architecture in collaboration with Willson Design, is a testament to the perfect harmony between modern living and ecological preservation. Perched atop a hill within a working cattle ranch, the Off-Grid House appears to be an integral part of the environment. The house is like a glass peninsula, with three-way operable glass walls that frame breathtaking views of the ocean and canyon, depending on the time and tide. Its elemental materials - steel, concrete, and glass - not only weather gracefully but also enhance the house's connection to the rugged terrain. The steel elements rust and oxidize, mimicking the ranch's natural surroundings. This remote property, without access to electricity, had to be self-sufficient. A photovoltaic system harnesses the sun's energy, while LED lighting and energy-efficient appliances minimize energy demands. Radiant floor heating ensures comfort year-round, and the insulating green roof not only regulates temperatures but also blends the house into its surroundings. Upon entering, you'll be greeted by the warm interior designed by Jessica Helgerson. It's a stark contrast to the exposed concrete exterior, with black walnut ceilings and timber accents creating a cozy atmosphere. Gold and Stygian tones add a touch of sophistication, and the sable fireplace in the living room stands as a testament to the house's commitment to both style and comfort. The project faced numerous challenges, including the strict coastal zone ordinances and the logistical constraints of the remote site. However, the dedication to creating something that felt ethically and morally right in this wild and beautiful place drove the team to persevere. The Off-Grid House stands as a remarkable achievement, preserving the natural environment while offering a luxurious retreat that respects and enhances its surroundings. It's a place where architecture and nature coexist in perfect harmony, inviting you to experience the beauty of California's Central Coast like never before. project info: Title: Off-Grid Guest House Location: Central Coast, California, USA Area: 800 ft² Year: 2017 Architecture: ANACAPA Architecture Collaborator: Willson Design Photographs: Erin Feinblatt Manufacturers: Ben Riddering, FireOrb, Fleetwood, Jayson Home, Lindsey Adelman Lead Architects: Dan Weber
