SDPD Crime Lab - Crime Scene Unit

Our Crime Laboratory contains eight different units. Every day we analyze evidence with varying types of technology. The technology used helps give us leads to identify suspects and victims. Today we are looking at our Crime Scene Specialists(CSS) within our Crime Scene Unit, who respond to the scene of serious crimes to collect evidence. Afterward, further analysis of the evidence is done in our crime lab. The CSS is responsible for locating, photographing, collecting, and preserving physical evidence for laboratory analysis by other laboratory units. They use photography to document crime scenes. They are trained in aerial, macro, daylight laser trajectory, and low light photography, including Luminol and painting with light techniques. The CSS is proficient in latent print processing using various techniques such as Cyanoacrylate Ester Fuming, powders, fluorescent dye stains, and chemical enhancers for bloody items, papers, and adhesive surfaces. They are called to provide expert witness testimony in court and provide specialized training to officers, detectives, and other neighboring agencies when requested
