Game time April 3, 2025 at 7 pm est www.Tabletopflights.com Presents A Live Game of Wings of Glory WWI Legends: German ACES Mission 2 Fear of the Float The North Sea and English Channel Friedrich Christiansen was a distinguished naval aviator during the First World War, known for his skill flying Hansa-Brandenburg W.12 seaplanes over the North Sea, the English Channel, and British coastline. His early success came with bombing raids on Dover and Ramsgate, earning him the Iron Cross 2nd Class. With a fierce dedication to reconnaissance and strike missions, Christiansen played a critical role in shaping one of the German Naval Air Service’s most effective units. On 15 May 1917, he claimed his first aerial victory off the coast of Dover, downing what was believed to be a Sopwith Pup—though some reports suggest it may have been an F.B.A. Type B or C, or even a Sopwith Baby. By September, he took command of the Naval Air Station at Zeebrugge, where he shot down a Porte FB2 Baby on the same day he was promoted to Oberleutnant zur See. In December 1917, he made headlines again by destroying the coastal airship C-27 near the Belgian coast, killing its commander, Flight Lieutenant John Francis Dixon. By then, he had flown over 440 missions and was awarded the prestigious Pour le Mérite—making him the only seaplane pilot to receive this honor. Promoted to Kapitänleutnant in 1918, Christiansen continued his offensive. On 15 February, he downed a Curtiss H12B off Felixstowe, and followed up with two more victories in April. June saw the destruction of three Felixstowe F2As. On 6 July, in a bold strike, he damaged the British submarine HMS C25 in the Thames Estuary, resulting in six British fatalities. By the end of the war on 11 November 1918, Christiansen had tallied 13 confirmed aerial victories—possibly as many as 21 when shared kills are considered—cementing his legacy as a formidable force in naval aviation.
