(1 Feb 2014) Clashes erupted between antifascist protesters and riot police in central Athens on Saturday, leaving at least two people injured. Police say more than 3-thousand supporters of Greece's extreme right Golden Dawn party held a rally to commemorate a 1996 incident which cost the lives of three navy officers and brought Greece and Turkey to the brink of war. In previous years of what has become an annual event, Golden Dawn supporters have marched towards the U.S Embassy chanting anti-U.S., anti-Turkish and anti-immigrant slogans. However Saturday's rally was peaceful, but the violent clashes which broke out about 200 hundred meters (218 yards) away were result of the counter-demonstration, staged by leftist groups in protest of the Golden Dawn rally. Last November the government implemented a crackdown on Golden Dawn following the fatal stabbing of an anti-fascist musician in Athens.
