Peripheral Electrical Stimulation: Techniques and Role in Neuromodulation

Hosted by Dr Naaz Desai, Krembil Research Institute - University Health Network, Toronto Peripheral electrical stimulation (PES) is used in clinical settings for a diverse range of applications from the facilitation of voluntary muscle contraction to the management of pain in neurological and musculoskeletal conditions to the training of lost functional movements. This webinar will focus on the application of one such peripheral electrical stimulation technique called Functional electrical stimulation (FES). FES is a methodology that uses bursts of short electrical pulses to generate muscle contractions. If these electrical pulses are applied to motor nerves they can elicit action potentials that propagate along the axons towards the target muscle. We will discuss how to illustrate the application of FES therapy (second embodiment) for retraining upper extremity function, in particular reaching and grasping, in individuals with stroke and spinal cord injury. The talk will discuss commonly used stimulation parameters, identification of patients appropriate for FES applications, indications and contraindications to FES, the results of various RCT’s with stroke and SCI subjects, videos of patients being trained using FES therapy and videos of patients before and after completion of therapy while performing some functional tasks. The higher-level goal is to provide a basic understanding of the FES technique to allow for its use in various research applications.
